In September 2025, the FDA granted market authorization to Essilor Stellest lenses through its De Novo pathway. These lenses are designed specifically for children with progressive myopia and are clinically proven to slow myopia progression by 71% on average over two years compared to standard single-vision lenses.
Stellest is the first spectacle lens of its kind available in the United States, following successful international use where millions of children are already benefiting.
How does it work?
- Central clear zone: The middle of the lens corrects the child’s vision just like a normal pair of glasses.
- Concentric lenslets: Around that central zone are hundreds of tiny aspherical lenslets arranged in 11 rings. These lenslets gently alter peripheral focus, creating what’s known as a “myopic defocus” signal that tells the eye to slow its growth.
- Natural comfort: Because only the periphery is affected, children still see perfectly sharp images straight ahead. Most kids adapt to the lenses within a few days.
